Carrier oils are plant-based oils. In aromatherapy, they are used to dilute essential oils and “carry” them to your skin. That’s because essential oils are made through the distillation of the aromatic leaves, flowers, barks, and roots of plants and are 100 to 1000 times more concentrated than the original state. By diluting essential oils with carrier oils, essential oils become adequate potency. Also, essential oils are volatile. By mixing them with carrier oils which are not volatile, they don’t volatilise so easily and are absorbed into skin instead.

Carrier oils bring us a variety of benefits, even on their own. When you use them with essential oils, you can expect even better results by adding the right essential oils according to which benefits you would like to get. A safe dilution is 1%. Use one drop of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil.

You can enjoy topical applications of essential oils using carrier oils in various ways, such as aroma massage, making your own DIY hair oils and aroma bath. (*Essential oils won’t be dissolved in water. They can irritate your skin if added to the bath on its own. Enjoy the fragrance and benefits of the essential oils by combining 3 to 12 drops of essential oils with a tablespoon (15ml) of carrier oils and add it to the bath.)
